The European Commission has announced a Call for
proposals in the programme of Community action on health promotion, information,
education and training within the framework for action in the field of public
health (1996-2000). The deadline for proposal submission is 15 September 1999.

The European Commission has announced a Call for
Proposals for activities on European integration. Subsidies are available for
study and research centres, and for organisations, associations and networks
bringing together teachers, researchers or students. Eligible activities involve
preparing and organising activities on European integration, and publication or
other means of exploiting the results of such activities. Priority will be given
to initiatives relating to European citizen information and training on:
1. the main future developments in the EU (Agenda 2000)
2. Community policy closest to citizen: employment, environment, consumer affairs,
education, training, culture
The deadline for proposal submission is 1 September 1999.

The Koninklijke Bibliotheek, the national library of the Netherlands, published a state-of-the-art report on digitization of microfilms. The survey is one of the studies carried out within the remit of our national preservation program of the Netherlands, called Metamorfoze. The Council of Research Ministers adopted the 11 decisions concerning the association of the candidate countries of Central and Eastern Europe and Cyprus to the Fifth Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (1998-2002). The proposals for the Council decisions were published in the EC Official Journals for 18 March and 15 April (and 16 April) 1999. The CEEC countires are the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Romania and Slovak Republic. The participation of each conuntry will include funding for research cooperation in the area of libraries, archives and museums. Each country's participation will be subject to certain terms and conditions which are set out in the annex to each proposal.

The Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) announced the availability of the Spanish translation of its publication, Preservation of Library & Archival Materials: A Manual. The major sections include: planning and prioritizing, the environment, emergency management, storage and handling, reformatting, and conservation procedures. The translation was made by the National Library of Venezuela, with support from the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR). NEDCC is located in Andover, Massachusetts, USA.

The British Council, the University Library Bielefeld and the Buchhaendlervereinigung des Boersenvereins are the organisers of the 5th European Bielefeld Colloquium; a conference focussing on European library developments which takes place every second year. The upcoming 5th European Bielefeld Colloquium will take place in Bielefeld, Germany. The venue will be Stadthalle. The conference languages will be German and English with simulataneous translation provided.
