Editorial

As the various projects funded under the European Commission's Telematics For Libraries programme within Fourth Framework reach their final phases, the dissemination aspect of projects becomes crucial. Projects will be looking to review their successes (and, indeed, failures) and, if they have proved successful, for the opportunity to continue and to seek alternative sources of funding.

The Exploit Interactive web magazine provides a valuable forum for dissemination. This has been recognised by many of the projects, and in this issue we are pleased to include reports on the CANDLE, MALVINE and HERCULE projects. We have now featured reports on over 20 projects in the five issues published so far. In addition to the project reports featured in this issue a report on the EXPLOIT accompanying measure describes the production of a series of presentation materials which can be used to promote the work of the Telematics For Libraries programme.

Exploit Interactive encourages contributions from other communities including national and institutional initiatives and from other relevant EU programmes. In this issue we include articles from this broader community on the transition from a funded project to a service and on a proposed model for refereed journal literature.

In order to encourage debate on the issues raised in articles, this issue sees the introduction of a web-based conferencing system called HyperNews. Many articles include a link to a Hypernews forum, which can be found at the bottom of the article. We encourage our features to make use of this new facility.

The Exploit Interactive web magazine not only provides a forum for dissemination, but also aims to provide a demonstration of best practises for web sites, and to document its approaches. In this issue we have released an enhanced search interface which makes use of Dublin Core metadata. The approach we have taken is described in this issue.

Exploit Interactive also seeks to disseminate information about the magazine, and, as a consequence, articles published in the magazine and the Telematics For Libraries programme itself. In March the editor attended the Internet Librarian International 2000 conference [1]. He presented a paper on Electronic Magazines: Issues In Implementation [2] which described the approaches taken in producing Exploit Interactive. He also gave a paper on Finding Resources On Your Web Site [3] which included a description of the use of metadata in Exploit Interactive to provide enhanced searching. Due to the cancellation of one of the speakers, the editor was also asked at the last moment to give a talk on web statistics, which made use of the two articles on this subject published in the current issue [4] [5].

The next issue of Exploit Interactive is due out in the first week of July. We welcome contributions, especially from Telematics For Libraries projects which have not yet been featured. If you would like to contribute, please send email to <exploit-editor@ukoln.ac.uk>. Contributions should be submitted by the first week of June.
